4x4 Bumper

A 4x4 bumper differs from a normal car bumper in both construction and intent. A car bumper is meant to deflect shopping carts and other vehicles in collisions involving speeds of less than 5 mph. 4x4 bumpers are meant to do all this, plus keep rocks out of your radiator and, though we don't recommend this, are sometimes used as an extra parking brake. Factory-installed light truck or Jeep bumpers are respectably solid pieces of steel bolted to the vehicle frame and covered with a metal or plastic bumper cover. These bumpers are meant to absorb low-speed impacts and prevent body damage. Factory bumpers don't usually protect your grill or lights, or easily accommodate winches. If you would prefer a bumper that can do those things, your options range from affordable to elaborate.

If you simply want a larger or heavier bumper, you could fabricate one, but that's another article. If you would like a 4x4 bumper with a skid plate or winch mount, these are available through many aftermarket sources. Look for tubular steel 4x4 bumpers which offer exceptional strength. You may also want to consider a bumper system composed of interchangeable components which can be installed as needed or removed as required. Another thing to consider is looking for an aftermarket 4x4 bumper customized for your rig which can be bolted on without the need for additional welding or cutting.

Keep in mind that the bumper originally provided with your 4x4 meets all current safety requirements, and are perfectly good for city driving. If, however, you intend to take your 4x4 off-road routinely, or you just want it to look like you do, then an aftermarket 4x4 bumper might be a good option.
