4x4 Wheels and Tires

Your 4x4 wheels and tires will provide your vehicle with the traction needed for whatever you are crawling across. Wheels and tires are terms which are often used interchangeably by those who haven't had to buy them yet, so first we need to establish that the tires are the rubber parts, while wheels are the metal assemblies on which the tires are mounted. Your 4x4 was provided with adequate tires and wheels when it came from the factory, and "adequate" in this case implies that the tires and wheels will safely get the 4x4 off the lot. If you prefer your 4x4 wheels and tires to have some more specialized skills, there are some aftermarket options for you.

You could replace your all-purpose 4x4 tires with mudding or all-terrain tires, which would have a different tread style from your original 4x4 tires. If you want to keep your factory wheels and stay with the same size tire, simply check the tire size which is printed on the wall of your tire. Once you find the best type of tire for your 4x4, find that type of tire in the correct size and purchase it.

If you want larger tires and wheels, you could also purchase a size or two larger, depending on how much clearance your wheel wells offer. Regardless of how much larger you want your wheel to be, it must match the hub pattern of your factory 4x4 wheel. This means that the bolt size and placement should be the same. If the larger 4x4 wheels and tires don't fit inside your wheel wells, you will need to lift your chassis off of your axles by a few inches, which would involve a lift kit.

Many shops and websites offer specialized 4x4 tires and oversized 4x4 wheels as well, and these businesses are often good sources of information for the new 4x4 owner.
