Offroad Truck Tires

Offroad truck tires are used for trucks and SUVs that require tougher tires with a superior grip on a regular basis. Offroad tires are not necessarily larger than street tires, although many 4x4 drivers prefer the additional advantages offered by oversized tires.

Street tires can be relatively smooth and still gain traction on pavement. This is because a paved road offers an uninterrupted contact surface for the tire. Street tires have grooves cut into the surface to channel off water and light snow, so they don't get in-between the tire and the pavement. When your tire is moving over deep mud, sand or shifting gravel, however, the grooves in the tire need to be deeper and more numerous to channel off the moving bits and give your tire something to hold on to.

Offroad truck tires are also more substantial than street tires. The walls on these tires are stronger and the treads are thicker. These qualities guard against two potentially dangerous situations. First, these tires are harder to puncture, which becomes very important at high speeds or awkward angles. Second, these tires can handle the abuse caused by repeatedly leaving the ground and then landing again, often with the entire weight of the vehicle on top of them. Even oversized street tires are not made for that kind of treatment and can rupture under those conditions.

It is important to note that offroad tires are for offroad use only. Using them on your daily commute will result in these tires wearing down faster than they are supposed to. If your offroad vehicle is also your daily driver, it may be worthwhile to keep two sets of tires mounted on wheels; one for driving in town, and the other for your next offroad adventure.
